Gerbera Daisies, the Perfect Flowers for Spring

gerbera daisiesNamed after Traugott Gerbera a German physician and botanist, Gerbera daisies are very popular, and one of the top five – cut flowers that are used commercially. Indigenous to the tropical areas of Asia, South America, and Africa these vivid colored plants come in many different shapes and sizes.

Gerberas are also known as African daisies, because it is believed that Scotsman Robert Jameson first discovered Gerbera daisies while running a gold mine in Northeastern South Africa in 1880. The stem of these flowers holds a composite of hundreds of petals, which place it in the same family as the sunflower.
