Although it’s considered a tropical plant and has it origins in Mexico and parts of Central America, Poinsettias plants marks the official start to the holiday season and it’s known as the Christmas flower. Joel Poinsett, the United States Minister to Mexico, introduced this brightly colored flower to America in the 1800s. But it was Paul Ecke Jr., who developed intense advertising for the correlation between the Poinsettias and Christmas.
He even sent out free plants to television stations so they could be seen over the holiday season, which starts at the end of November and continues until Christmas. Appearing on popular TV shows and specials were part of his promotional plans. From 1923 to the present the Ecke family’s business still carry the tradition of distributing Poinsettias domestically and worldwide.
The bracts or often mistaken to be petals, but actually they’re leaves. The foliage comes in a wide range of colors including red, white, pink, yellow, light green and orange. Poinsettias can easily be incorporated into your traditional holiday decorations; they also make wonderful gifts for those who are special in your life.
