There is no relationship like the one shared between a grandparent and grandchild. To grandchildren, grandparents are mentors, confidants, playmates, guardians, and best friends. Whether you share a love of baking, fixing up old cars, or some other passion with your grandparent, Grandparents Day is the perfect occasion to let the grandparents or grandparent-like figures in your life know how much you love and appreciate them. Remember to celebrate your grandparents on Sunday, September 13, 2015 with special dinners, gifts, games, and memories.
A housewife from Oak Hill, West Virginia who dedicated her time to advocating for the elderly in nursing homes is recognized as the official founder of Grandparents Day. Marian McQuade also spent her time educating the youth about the assets of the elderly and all of the contributions seniors had made to society throughout history. She took the idea of a holiday honoring the elderly to her state senator. In 1973, Senator Jennings Randolph introduced a resolution which called for a national holiday, Grandparents Day. Five years later, President Jimmy Carter issued a proclamation on August 3rd, stating that Grandparents Day would henceforth be recognized as a national holiday and celebrated annually on the first Sunday of September after Labor Day. He stated that the purpose of the holiday was to honor grandparents and give grandparents an opportunity to express the love they have for their grandchildren. In addition, Grandparents Day was also meant to be a day on which children could learn about the strength, wisdom, and abundant guidance the older generation could offer.
